Day Two Hundred and Fifty-Eight

In further pursuit of Item #80:

Window and sign on a barn near Willamette Mission State Park.

Window in an abandoned shed in a field just north of Lincoln, OR.

Windows and an overseer's platform in the Mission Mill Museum - this was a functioning woolen mill up from the late 1890's until the early 1960's. In the early 1900's, 20% of the population of Salem was in some way employed by the mill, and it had a reputation for avoiding some of the nastier tactics common in mills in this era. The owner's son (who became the owner later in his life) started in the dark, cold picking rooms just like everyone else, which I was glad to hear, even nearly 100 years after the fact. This bright, airy room was used for processing the cleaned wool into thread and weaving it into cloth.

Stairs and a window in the woolen mill.

  1. Nice that you have a large subject base in which to shoot.

  2. Agreed! This really is a great place to live as far as interesting things to take pictures of. I've just barely scratched the surface, especially since many of the outdoor areas look so dramatically different depending on the light and time of year. I could do an easy day trip in any one of several directions from my house and take pictures of a mountain, fabulous rock formations on the Oregon coast, national forests, indigenous flowers, waterfalls, rivers, rolling fields, countless Oregon Trail historic sites, falling-down barns, the state capital, a zoo, a symphony hall, the opera, pothead hippies, the Spruce Goose (not a replica), a cheese factory, and don't even get me started on Keep Portland Weird. ;)

I'm starting to think the REAL expense of Item #2 (a good camera) will be the mileage on my car!
